About the Event

The main focus of this workshop is to help students find techniques to Showcase Themselves

For one to showcase themselves they must know how to be confident in their abilities i.e. their skills, unique characteristics, experiences, aspirations, among many more elements. Despite there not being a set of golden rules that students can use to present themselves there are foundational principles that they are not exposed to in academia. This becomes more difficult when transitioning to higher education or to a career setting. We want our first speaker to go over the challenges of being a woman in healthcare leadership while highlighting the importance of confidence and risk taking.

In our scoping review, we came across a phenomenon called the double bind. Essentially, the double bind is the two kinds of judgements that are made about a woman before she is hired. These judgments are based on technical ability and achievements, and how their image and performance match societies and organization standards of what a woman in health should embody and subsequently how she should act.

Breaking these barriers is essential for women to feel comfortable and foster a sense of belonging in healthcare professions, especially when it comes to leadership roles. Equally important is that by recognizing the current weaknesses in such work environments, we can help build safer and more supporting work places. Confidence is key to leadership in health, therefore, we want our first speaker to go over ways to build confidence and be confident in the many different elements that make us each unique - particularly when in environments where one finds oneself a minority.

With our second speaker, we aim to bridge together experience and skills with a more tangible approach for students to Showcase Themselves via a breakdown of how to go about an interview. This will include techniques for what to do before-during-and after an interview, how to prepare for informational interviews and very importantly how to make an opportunity if one is not available.

Main themes/topics to cover:

  • Confidence, Taking Risks, Being Patient with Yourself
  • Interview Skills (pre-during-post + creating your own opportunities)

Skills we want to equip our audience with:

  1. Continuous Learning (sustaining momentum)
  2. Overcoming Challenges and Remaining Confident
  3. Interview Skills (pre-during-post + creating your own opportunities)
